Open an example of cross-referencing figures in Overleaf. In L a T e Xwe can label entities that are numbered sections, formulas, etcand then use that label to refer to them elsewhere, and the same commands apply to the figure environment as well they are numbered. The marker can be seen as a name that we give to the object that we want to reference.
Being able to automatically reference a figure within a LaTeX document is a very cool thing. The same technique works for referencing other objects within a LaTeX document, including tables and equations. Please read the comments for more details.
Cross-referencing description items is not supported by default, but can be done with a few additional lines of code in the preamble. Enumerate Ordered or numbered lists are cross-referenced with the label-ref command pair similar to figures, tables or chapters. Cross-referencing numbered items in lists enumerate. Loading the hyperref package, automatically adds links to cross-references and allows navigation to list items by clicking the reference.
If you need to insert cross-references to numbered elements in the document, like equations, sections and figures there are commands to automate it in L a T e X. This article explains how. This section will be later referenced.
In LaTeX, you can easily reference almost anything that can be numbered, and have LaTeX automatically updating the numbering for you whenever necessary. The objects which can be referenced include chapters, sections, subsections, footnotes, theorems, equations, figures and tables and the commands to be used do not depend on what you are referencing, and they are:. LaTeX will calculate the right numbering for the objects in the document; the marker you have used to label the object will not be shown anywhere in the document.
